Hong Kong Society of Cosmetic Chemists (HKSCC), in collaboration with City University of Hong Kong (City U; Department of Chemistry & Office of the Provost and Deputy President), along with the Cosmetic & Perfumery Association of Hong Kong Ltd (CPAHK) successfully hosted the 4th Hong Kong Secondary School Cosmetic Formulation Competition, which concluded on September 14, 2024. This competition aims to encourage secondary school students to leverage their creativity and chemistry knowledge to develop innovative cosmetic formulations, thereby fostering their interest in cosmetic science.
The competition commenced in May 2024, attracting a total of 100 secondary school teams. Participating teams first attended workshops organized by HKSCC and CityU to acquire relevant knowledge and skills. After that they utilized specific cosmetic raw materials provided by the organizers to create products such as shampoos, hair conditioning products, and hair styling products.
Following a rigorous selection process, nine outstanding teams were shortlisted to compete in the finals held at City U. During the finals, the teams not only delivered presentations but also set up product demonstration booths to engage audience votes.
Ultimately, the teams from Po Leung Kuk Tang Yuk Tien College, Ching Chung Hau Po Woon Secondary School, and TWGHs Kap Yan Directors' College excelled in formulating shampoos, hair conditioning products, and hair styling products, respectively, securing the championship titles. In addition to prizes sponsored by cosmetic manufacturers, the winning teams will have the opportunity to pilot their designed formulations using the production line at Department of Chemistry, CityU, under the guidance of HKSCC.
